Cincinnati, OH Sleeping Problems

Montgomery Dental Medicine.

At Montgomery Dental Medicine, our dentists provide treatment for sleep apnea and other abnormal sleep issues to our patients in Cincinnati, OH and Montgomery, OH. Restful sleep is an essential biological function for overall health and wellness. Lack of sleep causes excessive drowsiness in the daytime and results in lack of ability to concentrate, irritability and sleep deprivation can lead to serious problems, such as traffic accidents and work related accents.

During sleep, the temperature of the body, blood pressure, breathing rate and other functions decrease. The brain remains active and throughout the nut, normal sleep patterns fluctuate in four stages between rapid eye movement, REM, and non REM sleep. In a given night, about 75% of the time an individual is in non REM sleep.

Four Stages of Sleep:

  • Stage 1 – During this stage, an individual transitions from being awake to sleeping. The person experience relaxing of the breathing and muscles and begins to doze, but can still be awakened easily.
  • Stage 2 – The onset of sleep is indicated by the cessation of eye movement and changes in brain waves. The average person spends about 45% of REM sleep in stage 2.
  • Stage 3 – This stage represents only 12% of non REM sleep, as the sleep becomes very deep and it is more difficult to wake the person.
  • Stage 4 – In the deepest non REM sleep, the person is difficult to wake and may awaken feeling disoriented.

Disruptions in these normal sleep patterns result in a variety of symptoms and potential dangers. Our dentists treat sleep apnea and other abnormal sleep problems, including obstructive sleep apnea, snoring, and insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders. We offer oral appliance therapy as a non-invasive treatment for sleep apnea.
